LIFE-W2B Project: Innovative Waste-to-Biomethane Solution Led by ENVIROPLAN S.A.
The LIFE-W2B project, entitled “Sustainable Transformation of Waste to Biomethane, through Innovative Upgraded Anaerobic Digestion and Gasification” (LIFE24-CCM-EL-LIFE-W2B, Project No. 101213273), officially commenced on 1 September 2025 under the European Union’s LIFE Programme.
The project is funded under the call LIFE-2024-SAP-CLIMA-CCM and is managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) through the EU Funding & Tenders Portal.
The Kick-Off Meeting of the project took place on 23 September 2025 at Harokopio University in Athens, bringing together all project partners to discuss the technical objectives, implementation roadmap, and key milestones of the project.
Aiming to Transform Organic Waste into High-Value Biomethane
Coordinated by ENVIROPLAN S.A., LIFE-W2B aims to demonstrate an innovative and integrated waste valorisation process combining:
- Solar Drying (SD)
- Anaerobic Digestion (AD)
- Gasification (GF)
The process also includes biochar production and its integration into anaerobic digestion processes, enabling the production of biogas and syngas, which will subsequently be upgraded into biomethane through advanced biological upgrading units.
The integrated approach is expected to mitigate the limitations of each individual technology while maximising their overall efficiency and environmental performance. The project ultimately seeks to produce high-added-value biomethane and nutrient-rich biochar with a positive environmental footprint and strong economic viability.
Pilot Demonstration Facility
The LIFE-W2B concept will be validated through a pilot-scale demonstration facility capable of treating up to 1,000 tonnes of organic waste annually. The facility will operate continuously for at least 24 months, allowing the consortium to optimise operational parameters, collect extensive technical and environmental data, and evaluate the overall economic and environmental performance of the system.
The project is also expected to demonstrate the commercial potential of the proposed technology and facilitate its future deployment at full industrial scale or its integration into existing waste treatment facilities.
Environmental Impact
According to preliminary calculations, the LIFE-W2B process is expected to achieve a negative CO₂ balance of approximately -5.5 tCO₂eq per year, excluding additional avoided emissions resulting from landfill diversion.
At a treatment capacity of approximately 1,070 tonnes of waste per year, the system effectively becomes a carbon sink, contributing to greenhouse gas emission reductions and supporting the transition toward climate-neutral waste management solutions.
